Appearance: Detective Shades is a fairly tall individual who often wears dark suits and coats that go well with his dark eyes. While usually cleanshaven, the stress of his job and personal matters sometimes cause him to forget to shave for a day or two. Due to usually working nights, Shades has a slight paleness to his complexion. When angered, these together and his chilling stare as he displays his more ruthless side are part of what as earned him the nickname he's gained from some criminals.
Shades always wears a pewter cross necklace, and has a scar from a bullet wound on his left arm, due to a betrayal from a corrupt partner a few years back.
Personality: Nathaniel is a religious man of Catholic faith. He joined the force out of a desire to personally make criminals pay for what they've done when his father's murderers escaped justice. He is a shewd and intelligent man who is a skilled detective, making him an asset on the force. While willing to bribe those of the lower class for information regarding a case he is on, he will not accept bribes from corrupt socialites and politicians to turn the other way on a crime.
However, Shades has a much darker side; he is known for his ruthlessness and his brutality towards criminals. When interrogating someone he has captured or apprehended, his cruelty is infamous, he will strike, beat, or even torture them without any hesitation, regardless of how old they are or what gender they are so long as it gets the job done. He despises criminals and has disgust for those who work in organized crime or prostitution.
Family: Elenor and Reginald Shades, both very religious parents which resulted in Nathaniel having a strict Catholic upbringing. His mother is still alive, though moved out of the city with his grandmother. His father is deceased.
History: Nathaniel Shades was born to Elenor and Reginald Shades in 1929; due to his parents strict Catholic values, Nathaniel lived in a well-to-do but strongly religious household that has influenced his beliefs well into today.
Once a more pleasent and social young man at school, all of which he'd gone to were private catholic schools, this all changed over a weekend when Nathaniel was 16. His father, a priest at the local cathedral, was shot in a robbery that had taken place in the church itself. Nathaniel had the misfortune of having come to visit his father that day only to find police all around, and his father's body left there to be examined. Nathaniel prayed that the ones responsible would be caught, and when the man responsible, a gang leader, was apprehended, it had seemed his prayers were answered, but then due to the gang leader having friends in high places, he was freed and let off charge-free.
Rather then lose his faith over this, Nathaniel took it differently; believing that God was testing him, that it was him who must now find and deal with his father's killer. Years passed, and Nathaniel moved on to college and became a highly successful graduate in criminal investigations and criminology, and he joined the law enforcement. With his skill and dedication, Nathaniel became a detective very quickly, and ironically his first case involved a crime perpetrated by the very man who had shot his father.
Upon encountering him, Nathaniel attempted to deal with him but was suddenly stopped by his partner, whom he discovered to be on the man's boss's payroll with intention of making the case seem too dangerous to continue, and was shot in the arm. Without hesitation, Nathaniel moved his gun to his unhurt arm and shot him dead, and then, in an adrenaline rush, got up and went after his father's killer personally.
The two faced eachother off in an old building the man was hiding out in, and as the man gloated about how God does nothing for his people, Nathaniel disagreed, as otherwise he'd have never found him, and shot the man through the legs. Nathaniel spent the next hour torturing the man for what he'd done and information on who he worked for before finally killing him. Both bodies were ruled as caused by the gunfight.
Over the next few years, Detective Nathaniel Shades worked up his ruthless reputation in both the Police Department and the criminal underworld as an asset to the former and a ruthless enemy to the latter. He continues to work at the police department, getting through life and his job a case at a time.
Main Talent: As a hobby, he paints, and has a collection of several gothic paintings of angels, demons, and other supernatural entities he has made. His primary dedication, however, is in his job.
Weaknesses: Shades is known for his temper towards criminals who give him trouble during interrogation. If pushed, he gets violent quickly, and displays an almost sadistic brutality towards whomever he's forcing information from.
Due to his religious values, Shades is very prejudice towards people who function in more gray areas of life, in particular those who work for organized crime, prostitutes, drug dealers, and other such individuals.
It being the '50s, a time of less tolerance and acceptance towards one-another, Nathaniel harbors some prejudice against ethnic and religious minorities.
Strengths: Detective Shades is an exceptional and skilled police detective, with a degree in criminal investigations. He is extremely good with a gun and a knife, as well as hand-to-hand.
Anything Else: When off-duty, Shades will visit a few bars for a drink, watch a few stage shows and the like, and on occasion sell his paintings, many of which are popular with the churches.
RP Example: This man would not escape. He'd been able to far too many times now. Nathaniel's own partner tried to insure the most recent one. God works through His children, and now He worked through Nathaniel, who had sworn this man would pay for the death of his father, a man of God, years ago.
Chasing him through the old building, the man Joseph Carlson a floor above him, Nathaniel, fighting the pain and bleeding in his left arm caused by his partner's betrayal, paused when he realized the next floor was the last. Joseph could either be lying in ambush or attempting to find a window that would lead to an outdoor stairway. Pausing, he turned the knob and pushed the door open, gun ready.
As soon as the door opened Joseph fired shot after shot, only to discover he'd hit nothing but air. The detective who'd shot his own partner, paid by his boss to keep Joseph alive till his debts were settled, without a second thought was nowhere to be seen. Sweat rolled down his face, this was no man... he was like a monster, like a grim reaper coming to claim his soul...
Then the detective stepped in, gun pointed at him. Panicking, Joseph raised his gun again and squeezed the trigger.

Nathaniel Shades smiled in amusement, it was amazing, how pathetic and cowardly his father's killer truely was now. "God is vengeful, Joseph Carlson." He said in a low tone.
"Screw your God! He didn't stop me from robbing that church your daddy worked at! I got away with it, and once you put me in jail I'll get out again. God isn't gonna do anything then either!" Joseph said mockingly.
Nathaniel approached. "Oh really? I say He did. If it weren't for Him, I'd have never found you. And who said anything about jail?" He asked, and before Joseph could reply, Nathaniel emptied four rounds into him. Joseph's lifeless body fell to the floor with a sickening thud. Nathaniel kissed his pewter cross necklace, then regarded the body with disgust. "Don't expect any less mercy from God." He said coldly. His father avenged, a case solved. Two birds, one stone. All in a day's work.
