Full Name: James Byron Dean
Nickname(s): Jimmy, Jim, Byron
Stage Name: N/A
Age: 28
Artistic Pursuit(s): Actor, photographer.
Image: James, James and Little Bastard, On the set of Giant, On the set of Giant, getting into charater and after a day of fimling.
Appearance: James has thick dirty blonde hair that is always pushed back. He isn’t one to smile much, but it doesn’t mean he’s not friendly. James can usually be found in his white plain tee shirt paired with jeans for a casual look, or a coat and drain pipe trousers for a more than casual look. James wears glasses as he doesn’t have the best eyesight, but he can be seen without them if he thinks his particular character doesn’t wear glasses.
Personality: James can be described in so many ways he seems like 5 different people. This is because he lets different people see different aspects of him. James became a closed off and guarded person after his mother died when he was younger. Today he is moody and generally keeps himself to himself. He always stands up to people and takes no crap from the people above him, meaning studios and producers. James can be intense and difficult, he is known for always testing people to see how far he could push them. If they stand up to him he respects that.
He is an intriguing free spirit. Because of his mother’s death he is very conservative and keeps his private life private and far away from the studios. James also studies people carefully from behind his crafted wall.
Family: Mother - Mildred Dean (desceased), Father – Winton Dean and Step Mother – Ethel Dean.
History: James Dean was born in Indiana where he lived until he turned 6 when his family moved to California. At age 9 his mother died and James’ life changed forever. His father was not able to care for James and sent him to live with his aunt Ortense and uncle Marcus back in Indiana. This parental rejection was an emotion he felt for the rest of his life; it’s an emotion he brings to his troubled characters.
He attended high school in Indiana where he took drama and liked it a lot. After high school James moved back to California to live with his father and step mother. He was enrolled at Santa Monica College where he majored in pre-law, but when he told his father he preferred acting, he was cut off and shut out again. James transferred to UCLA and changed his major to drama but soon after dropped out in 1951 to pursue a career as an actor, moving to New York.
James tried to make his own way in the acting world, he went to cattle calls and immersed himself in the environment of the poor and the struggling, soon to come out on top. After acting in commercials and getting small parts on television he moved to New York in October 1951 and was accepted into the legendary Actor’s Studio.
1953 brought James his big break in a film called East of Eden. He was later cast in Rebel Without a Cause and Giant. Rebel is still his biggest film to date, making him the star and icon he is today.
After landing his role in East Of Eden James brought his first race car and started his hobby of racing. On the 30th of September 1955 this hobby almost took his life as he drove his new Porsche 550 Spyder to a raceway at Salinas, California. Though he wouldn’t make it to California as the car collided with a Ford Custom Tudor coupe on US Route 466. James was put in hospital for months. He had to learn everything over again but this only made him stronger. He carries around the scars of what almost was, everyday but it hasn’t changed him, he still lives life in the fast lane.
Nowadays he is based in New York but travels all over the country as his job takes him everywhere.
Main Talent: Acting is what James loves to do.
Weaknesses: He lets his insecurities drive him personally and because of the roles he picks, he often has difficulty getting into scenes as it takes him a while to mentally prepare himself for the character. James also doesn’t see the point in time as he lives for himself and however he pleases so he’s always late
Strengths: James is different, he doesn’t care what people think about him. He’s an intense little devil as some describe him, and this fuels his passion for acting as its what he truly loves.
Anything Else: He’s eccentric and doesn’t do the Hollywood thing, doesn’t do what the studios tell him to. Played basketball in high school and won a few awards for it.
RP Example:
As night fell over New York the darkness concealed all. James Dean sat at the foot of the old garage stairs just letting the world go by, something he didn’t usually do, but tonight was different. Tonight was the anniversary of the crash that almost took his life.
“Little bastard.” James muttered talking to the car, and getting up to observe the wreckage as he lit yet another smoke. Gritting his teeth he ran a hand over the dented, crushed and destroyed little car he once loved.
“Four years. Four fucking years.” This was supposed to be only his fourth visit to the wreckage but everyday he felt out of control and on edge James forced himself to drive down to lower New York and take a good hard look at the car and where he could be right now. This routine however didn’t curb his rebellious ways but made him only slightly more cautious as to how to spend his borrowed time on this earth. He was still the James Dean that lived in the fast lane, but now he often took note of the surroundings instead of letting them pass by.
As James pulled the cigarette away from his lips, a trail of smoke followed. He stared at it, his mind getting lost in the intricate patterns, letting his thoughts take over, swirling images of that fateful night around in his head. James was only pulled back to the garage and the wreckage as a cop car went past, its sirens blasting. “Ah, lower New York, how I love you so.” He muttered condescendingly.
James tossed the cigarette on the floor and stubbed it out with his foot. “Until next year.” He told the car, patting it as he walked past it and on his way to the door. He locked up the garage and began the long walk home in the cold of the New York night.
