Ruby woke up, hair tossled from a night of 'working'. She looked beside her, suprised to see the client was still there.
Must have paid for all night? she thought placidly. Roughly shoving him to get up she slipped on a black silk nightgown, heading to the kitchen to get some water.
She stopped dead at the sight of her parents.
"M-mom?" she said quietly, "Dad? You weren't meant to be here till-" she looked over at the calender. "Oh..." she muttered, the date had been circled with a big red circle. How the hell had she forgotten?!
"Yes. Today." her mother said primly, "We assumed that was why the door was unlo-" her mother stopped short as a middle aged man stumbled out of Ruby's bedroom. Handing her a wad of cash he kissed her cheek, his hand goping her ass.
"Thanks for last night Jewel, see you on the club stage soon eh?" he laughed, noisily exiting the apartment.
Ruby looked pained, like she wished the floor would just swallow her up. Her parents looked stunned.
"What was that?" her father asked. Ruby swallowed heavily. "That- that you weren't meant to see..." she mumbled.
"He paid you!" her mother squawked. "Is that- do you?" she stuttered.
Ruby rolled her eyes, deciding to be up front and honest.
"Yes mother. I get paid to sleep with men. I dance for them, earn my money on and off my feet." she said darkly.
Putting a hand to a forehead her mother gasped. "You're not serious!" she breathed, looking disgusted.
Ruby ran a hand through her hair, "Yes. I'm a whore." she said, her voice rising the way it always did around her family.
"We told you this would happen! We said you'd never make it here! And look! You didn't!" her mother yelled at her, her own voice rising to and above Rubys level.
"You NEVER believed in me! I don't CARE what you think. It's my job! It earns good money-"
"Dirty money." her mother cut in. Glaring at Ruby darkly.
"Why are you such a disapointment? Ever since you came here it's like you can't remember being a sweet high school girl!" pleaded Rubys mother.
"I'm still your daughter! The only things Ido because I have to! It's not like I do anything else!"
"So whats this?" her mom looked oddly triumphant as she held up Rubys drugs.
"You went through my stuff?" Ruby gasped, her jaw dropping.
"It's a good job I did now isn't it? You need HELP Ruby! You're sick! I'm taking you out of this place." her mother said, taking a step towards her.
"NO. GET OUT!" Ruby yelled, snatching the packet back and slamming it on the kitchen counter. "Just LEAVE ME ALONE!" she screamed, pushing them towards the door.
She managed to get them into the hallway,
"Ruby! You're a DRUG ADDICT! A WHORE! GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE YOU DO!" her mom yelled back, reaching for Ruby again.
"No! MOM SHUT UP!" Ruby screamed again, slamming the door in her face. Sliding her back down the hard wood she slid onto the floor. Hugging her knees and crying. She could still hear her moms words to her though, "If you don't open this door!" Her mom paused. "No? Fine. I'll disown you!" she threatened.
Ruby leapt up, flinging open the door at their retreating backs she glowered at them. "Good. Because you're already dead to me." she growled, crashing the door shut again. She knew anyone on her floor or the ones either side would probably have been able to hear her, but she didn't care.
"Well that went well." she said bitterly. Glaring at the calender that had failed to remind her of the exact -day-.
She must have stayed there on the floor for countless hours before deciding to get dressed as the sky was already growing dark. She'd just slipping on her usual black attire and finished her jewlerry and make up when her phone rang. Going over to it she picked up,
"Hello?"
"Is this Ruby Walker?"
"Yes... why?" Ruby frowned, the voice on the other end sounded grim.
"I'm Steve Johnson. Emergency doctor at Oregon hospital."
"Uh.. okay..."
"Can you tell me your parents names?"
"Claire Walker and Richard Walker. Why? Whats going on?"
"*sigh* I'm sorry Ruby... their car was hit by a train after they entered the state of Oregon. We did everything we could but... they didn't make it." he said slowly, his voice gentle.
Ruby froze. A white hot sensation poured through her body.
"They're dead?"
"I'm afraid so, we tried Ruby. We did." he told her. He sounded like he was about to say something else.
"Thanks... uh... Bye." Ruby said softly, dropping the phone onto the hook.
She didn't even remember starting to cry but there were tears ruining her new make-up. She bit her thumb, unsure of what to do. She didn't know how to handle this.
As she tried to deal with knowing they were dead. She collapsed to the floor as her knees gave way, crawling to the phone she dialled for Logan.
"Pickuppickuppickup..." she whispered, when it rang off. "Fuck you!" she yelled, slamming the phone against the wall and getting up.
Running for the door she flung it open, slamming it behind her and leaping up the stairs. Finding Tylers door she crashed against it, hammering on it with her fist. Still crying but managing to beat the crap out of his door at the same time.
